The DeLuca estate was massive. Wall to wall surveillance. 24-hour security guards. Massive metal gates. The works.

It was in Upstate New York. I’d done stake-outs here before when I was a rookie. It was always difficult doing it in wealthy suburbs. Because you always tended to stick out like a sore thumb driving a regular vehicle. Most teams would pose as Cable or Electric companies fixing a bad connection.

Not me. Not today. Today, I was driving a black and yellow 2010 Camaro. I made sure to park it about a mile and a half away from the house. Hidden behind the many rosewoods that dotted the landscape. I sat in the car trying to figure out how in the heck I would be able to get in there.

My cell started vibrating. Perlman. I’d totally forgotten about him. I decided not to answer. I checked my firearm and slipped it under my belt. I walked up toward the house, hidden by the dense trees that lined its walls. I picked a blind spot where their surveillance cameras wouldn’t be able to track me. I climbed the wall, jumped over the edge, and landed on a well-manicured lawn.

Easy Peasy.

So far so good. Inside the compound, it looked like a golfing paradise. Tree shrubs that were well trimmed and cared for. Landscaping that probably cost more than the average house. In the middle, dead centre there was a water fountain right in front of the house steps. Talk about living in style, these guys had it all.

I edged closer to a tree, nearly being noticed by one of the patrolmen. He was a chubby guy wearing an ill-fitting suit with a machine gun strapped to his shoulder.

I waited for him to leave, holding my breath as he searched the area. For a brief moment, he stopped and stared in my direction. My blood froze. Was he going to come and investigate? No. He continued scanning the area and left.

I moved closer to the house, jumping behind bushes and trees. Crawling on my belly as I tried to avoid being seen. My marine survival instincts taking over, it’d been awhile since I’d been in the Corps. But it all came back to me. Picking up what I’d forgotten, seemed as easy as riding a bike.

I edged closer to the house, and then something peculiar at the far left of the house piqued my interest. I saw someone staring at me from one of the windows.

Shit.

I ducked reflexively, hoping they hadn’t seen me. But I knew I was done for, because they started opening the window. My cover was blown for sure, and there was no way I was getting out of this one alive.

The window opened and to my surprise I saw Jess waving me over. Yes, Jess. I couldn’t believe it. Fuck my luck. She didn’t seem angry at me, I assumed, since she wasn’t alerting anyone in the house about my presence.

I hurried over to the spot just below her window, and began to scale the building.
